I generally find books with a romance between characters where one helped raise the other to be off-putting. But this one worked for me. Maybe it was because Lando was wholly devoted to Kellan from the beginning.This was an interesting introduction to a new universe. I'd have liked the system of magic to be clearer (less nebulous) so that we could have a reasonable expectation of what is possible. I'm excited to read further in this series.

Not only is Royal Guardian sexy as hell...it's amazingly imaginative. This is a super sci-fi fantasy blend that combines all the elements into a MMRomance Whirlwind. I love what Jo did with this technology and magic fusion. Her characters are very interesting, especially Bobik. I want my own Bobik - seriously! I know there is more coming in this series and I just can't wait to get my hands (and eyes) on it!
Confession time. I have never read a book set in the future. I've never even watched more than a handful of Star Trek episodes a couple of decades ago. I think it's safe to say I was stepping out of my comfort zone. Well that zone has well and truly moved to include outer space. I was hooked from the very beginning. Jo Tannah is a great story teller. The words flow beautifully and I could actually feel the excitement bubbling, at first on the development of the Prince's relationship with Lando and again during that mission towards the end of the book. Now I must wrap up this review so I can immediately launch myself into book 2.
This engrossing and very interesting tale has so much packed into such a short story. You have Prince Kellan, Lando, his Royal guardian, and future consort, and Bobik, his fiercely protective symbiont who will do ANYTHING to keep Kellan safe. Throw in political intrigue, power plays, plots and counter plots, steamy sex, and not knowing who can be trusted made this a must read that had me hooked from the very first page, and eagerly waiting to get my hands on the next one.
Royal Guardian is the first installment of the Rise of the Symbiots.
Containing about 68 pages, it is a novella. This is basically an introduction to the series. The world building is believable, the characters well drawn, and the premise is made believable.
As a reviewer, I am not happy with the trend of breaking a story into short sections and making the reader purchase a book in installments.
I know these are termed "cliffhangers"; but, it may be advisable for the reader to wait for more of the story to become available.
What is presented is a good solid story. The dragon symbiont, one soon to presumably be two, is a creative plot device that moves the plot forward with compelling action and some humor. The love story is basically sound and the characters real.
This book is recommended with the provision that the reader wait until more installments of the book are available.
