Phryne Fisher is trying to enjoy a gala performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddigore at His Majesty's Theatre, but there are dark doings afoot. The leading man is poisoned, followed by his understudy, then a massive curtain weight crushes a company member to a pulp. It certainly looks as if someone has it in for the production, but the show must go on! Murder and poison make this a case for the Melbourne police, but as a friend of the troupe's manager, Phryne can't help but become involved. The specter of a deceased actress haunts the theater, gloves go missing, whiskey goes green, the elusive scent of hyacinths wafts though the wings, a child with a tell-tale birthmark is sought. And, love appears to be blossoming between Phryne and the handsome young scion of a Chinese merchant family.

Fans of Gilbert and Sullivan will particularly enjoy this, the seventh of Greenwood's popular Phryne Fisher mysteries set in 1920's Australia.

"Dot, I have the strangest feeling that I’m caught up in a Gilbert and Sullivan plot."

Beautiful, brilliant, svelte Phryne Fisher’s old pal, Sir Bernard Tarrant, begs her to investigate when an actor and his replacement are both poisoned during a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s "Ruddigore" — ergo, the title. I enjoyed the novel, but the resolution of one of the murders was as implausible as something out of a G&S operetta; the other murder inquiry was much better. While I missed “red-raggers” Cec and Bert and Phryne’s adopted daughters Ruth and Jane, I was pleased to see Inspector “Call Me Jack — Everyone Else Does” Robinson and Phryne’s maid Dot Williams once again. In addition, I liked author Kerry Greenwood’s new characters from His Majesty’s Theatre; that, combined with the subplot of a decades-old murder were enough to propel a three-star novel to four.

This novel, the seventh in Greenwood’s divine series also marks, thanks to a third subplot, the introduction of enticing Chinese merchant Lin Chung. He’s the latest lover for the irrepressible Phryne, who has no use for monogamy nor convention. While fans will enjoy "Ruddy Gore" a bit more, readers new to the series can easily savor it as a stand-alone.

Ruddy Gore Phryne Fisher #7 Phryne Fisher Mysteries edition by Kerry Greenwood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

My love affair with the tenth G&S opera is still going strong after more than half a century; and, as the chronicle of one production, I purely loved this novel. There were a few points that made me wonder, such as Sir Roderic being consistently identified as Robin's father; or a Richard Dauntless yearning and pining to move up to the role of Sir Ruthven. (Yes, Ruthven is definitely the part I'd want, were I a young male baritone; but Richard has to be one of the plum tenor roles in the series, doesn't it?) Still, for the most part, the G&S research seems solid enough to mark a fellow Savoyard; and when I found reference to an 1898 London revival of the opera, I figured we must be in an alternate timeline, where the libretto and music may indeed be a bit variant. Nowhere else had I sniffed "alternate timeline," but maybe if I were better acquainted with Australian history in the 1920s, I would have. I was a bit less satisfied with this as a murder mystery, but maybe I'm just falling out of love with that genre as a whole, and no longer care much about reading whodunits unless they're Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown, Judge Dee, or Brother Cadfael. I kept thinking, "Yes, this seems like very good mystery writing, with a strong sleuth who is probably very interesting and sympathetic ... if you like this kind of thing." On the whole, I think I would have been even better satisfied with the story if it had no successful murders in it at all; and I probably won't read any other Phryne Fisher mysteries unless they also have a G&S basis. Tried watching one of the TV episodes; it looked quite competent and faithful in spirit, and I will definitely watch for the episode based on "Ruddy Gore"; but for none of the others will I give up "The Artful Detective."
Overall, I will give each book in the Phryne Fisher series basically the same comments. A friend introduced me to the series by author Kerry Greenwood and I enjoyed them all. They are light and fairly fast reading tho the plot can get a bit slow in parts. The books themselves are "thin" so you feel as if you won't be spending hours getting halfway through the plot. The heroine, Ms. Fisher, is a funny, clever, and quick-witted character with a vocabulary to match (i.e., have you ever heard of "cami-knickers?" o). The beginning chapters mention how she got to where she is (i.e., a wealthy and influential socialite who is also a self-proclaimed investigator), but it's quick and clean, unlike so many books where entire chapters are taken up reviewing the backstory to the book. Consequently, you don't have to read each book sequentially, though when changes happen, such as a marriage or death, the author spends time in character and plot development. If you feel that you must have this background, then read them in sequence, but as stated earlier, this isn't mandatory. In summary, this is an enjoyable series of books that won't take a lot of time or brain power with many characters and multiple plot twists - just a good, 'ol fashioned time reading!
Not my favorite Miss Fisher Mystery, too many characters, missed the regulars like, Cec and Bert, Dot and her policeman beau, the Butlers disappointed in the confusing vague ending, but still enjoyed Kerry Greenwoods style of writing. Found the background of the G&S comic operetta interesting, since I do like G.S. Like the introduction of Lin. But felt Ms Greenwood was struggling with this attempt at writing a cohesive mystery - too disjointed. One character seemed to fade halfway through the book, as if she didn't know quite what to do with him - just as well to have left him out. Will read the next book, and if that is as limpid as this one, will stop collecting them.
I am a big fan of the Australian based Phryne Fisher mysteries, but, truth be told, this is one of my least favorite, thus far. The one bright spot is the introduction of the handsome and intelligent Lin Chung into the mix.

This mystery centers around the gala performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, where one of the main characters unexpectedly gives what is to be his final performance. As luck would have it, Phryne just so happens to be watching the performance when the unthinkable happens.

Mystery abounds, as old and new theatre business collides in the present, with many possibilities and death waiting in the wings. While moderately entertaining, the book suffers from the fact the many of the regular supporting characters are missing in action. So, the ensemble feel is gone. Still, fans of Phryne Fisher will still find some enjoyment in this book.
